1930s Vintage GPO style Two Pole DPDT Large Knife Switch
This amazing looking piece of electrical history is a 1930s Vintage GPO style Two Pole DPDT Large Knife Switch.
Ebonite and Brass construction on a Mahogany plinth, the knife switch is a Double Pole Double Throw (DPDT) centre-off, and probably used in an industrial setting e.g Marine/Factory/Power Station. They are often referred to as Frankenstein switches!
There is no discernible maker's mark. In good condition, we have left the patina but it would also look great polished. There are a few scuffs and surface blemishes but it's in good condition for its age.
Approximate Size
- Base Width: 18.8 cm
- Height with switch horizontal: 4 cm
- Base Depth: 12.4 cm
The ebonite in the centre of the switch yoke is made from Ebonite/Paxolin and is there to prevent flashover between the poles at high voltage. It must have been used for very high current applications due to the thickness of the conductor!
A lovely item for collectors of electrical devices or steampunk!
