1925 George V British Bronze Farthing Charm

This is an unusual example of a 1925 George V British Bronze Farthing Charm in that someone has painstakingly cut out the coin around the head of the King! You can still make out Britannia on the reverse.

Using coins for making jewellery has been popular through the centuries. This farthing was probably made as a fob watch charm or for a charm bracelet.

The  British farthing (¼d) coin, was a unit of currency of one-quarter of an old penny (1d), or one nine hundred and sixtieth (1/960) of a pound sterling.  Farthing is a derivation from “fourthing.” It was minted in bronze, and replaced the earlier copper farthings. It was used during the reign of six monarchs: Victoria, Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George VI and Elizabeth II, ceasing to be legal tender in 1960. It featured two different designs on its reverse: from 1860 until 1936, the image of Britannia; and from 1937 onwards, the image of a wren. Britain’s smallest bird. Like all British coinage, it bore the portrait of the monarch on the obverse.
