It comes in its original wood transit case, 10T 612 Serial No. 44, and with operating instructions / calibration chart cards (10T/610) stored in the lid of the case. This is stamped with the Air Ministry logo and the original dispatch label for RAF Carlisle. It was supplied by Solartron Laboratory Instruments Limited, UK, but usually made by Marconi. The case also has the original hanging wires, muslin sheaths used for storing spare valves and includes several suspended valves.
The case measures approx. 31 X 25 X 27 cm.
The W1191A forms part of the Station WT Portable No. 9 radio set. It would have been used in conjunction with the Receiver type R1224A and Transmitter type T1422. This type of meter was used as a Lancaster Bomber and USAF B17 Wavemeter Counter Radar jamming measure.
Covering the frequency range 100kHz to 20MHz with 8 bands, it is calibrated with a 1MHz Crystal Calibrator against a calibration chart. Power was supplied by a 60V primary battery for HT and a rechargeable 2V 7Ah battery for the LV. AF output was to earphones. Batteries and earphones are not included.
Valves used: VR19 (Triode 215P), 2 x VT50 (HL2K), VR82 (Triode Heptode 220TH)
The W1191A had the same functions as the American BC-221.
