1916 WW1 Ottway Naval Gunsight Brass Telescope VP 3 to 9 4752
This amazing looking scientific instrument is a 1916 WW1 Ottway Naval Gunsight Brass Telescope V.P 3 to 9, 4752. Made by W Ottway & Co, Ealing, UK, a noted high quality manufacturer of optical instruments.
Composed of, predominantly, Brass and very heavy! This type of gunsight was often used on the gun turrets of British Royal Navy ships, including “Dreadnought.”
Approximate Dimensions:–
Length: 60cm
Diameter: 6.4cm (~2.5″)
Tripod height to barrel of scope: 20.5cm
The telescope sits on a small tripod, probably homemade post WW1, with ball joint fitting allowing the telescope to swivel at different angles. The tripod is slightly unsteady with a rubber foot missing.
The telescope would make a wonderful display item and a real tangible piece of maritime military history. I haven’t polished it as some people prefer to see the original patina. It does have scuffs and scratches commensurate with age and use.
The telescope carries the following engraved labels:-
MODIFIED W A/T AVIMO LTD Turn To Focus
Turn to Change Power no. 4752
” Gunsighting” Patent V.P 3 to 9
W Ottway & Co.Ltd
Ealing 1916
Where V.P means variable power
