WW2 Wireless Set 46 / WS46 Microphones and receivers headgear no.5 ZA 14307

We think this wonderful looking radio receiver headgear is a WW2 Wireless Set 46 / WS46 Microphones and receivers headgear no.5 ZA 14307.

Described in Wireless for the Warrior Vol. 1, by L. Meulstee, as Microphones and receivers headgear no.5 ZA 14307, parts of this set, e.g. the throat microphone, were also used in other wireless sets including WS38 and WS19.

In very good cosmetic condition with some surface scuffs and blemishes. It comprises two carbon microphones, MTLL No.2 Mk II ZA 19734, which attach to a 5-point plug and bakelite SG Brown CLR headphones.

Sound was picked up & transmitted as vibrations through the carbon microphone worn just above the Adam's Apple. Air and tanks crews reported that voices could be heard better over background engine noise better than other types of microphones.

The elements of the headgear receiver set are marked as follows:-

  • SG Brown Headphones: SGB CLR
  • 5-point plug No.5 ZA 1853
  • Throat Microphone:  MTLL No.2 Mk II  ZA 19734
  • Webbing: Finnigans ltd YA 5000
