WW2 RAF Seaplane Hull And Float Engineer's Note Book With Two Cartoon Pencil Drawings
This WW2 RAF Seaplane Hull And Float Engineer's Note Book With Two Cartoon Pencil Drawings, belonged to DW Woodley, CTI. The notebook was printed in May 1939 by W&S Limited.
Approximate Size:
- Width: 19cm
- Height: 24.8cm
- Depth: 1.5cm
It provides a wonderful snapshot of the teaching given to the WW2 ground crew responsible for the upkeep of the 'Hull and Float' seaplanes, for example a Supermarine Walrus, made from a wood and aluminium alloy based airframe. In pretty good condition, the outer hardback cover is discoloured and stained. The internal pages have yellowed with age.
The book contains some well drawn schematics of parts of a marine aircraft as well as hand written abbreviations, descriptions, and definitions of the parts and processes used in maintaining and manufacturing the machines including:-
- Erection Of A Wire Braced Biplane
- Wire and sheet metal gauges
- British Association screw sizes and types
- Rivet types
- Wood types and defects acceptable for use in fuselage construction
- Corrosion and anti corrosion treatments e.g. Cadmium plating (not to be recommended!).
- Annealing
- Heat treatment of metals
It is also accompanied by two amusing pencil drawn cartoons signed by 'Hoyal,' (perhaps a friend of Woodley's). One is named "The Carpenter's Nightmare," and the other "There are worse people than Trainees I'll bet." Both are drawn on the back of graph paper and offer a slightly irreverent look at the boss!
A real slice of WW2 RAF marine division history!
