Vintage Smiths Travel Alarm Clock In A Zippered Red Leather Case
This is an exquisite, working, Vintage Smiths Travel Alarm Clock in a Zippered Red Leather Case. A very unusual and ingenious design, it has a chrome surround to the face and back.
The single control knob is attached by a fine chain to the rear of the clock and can be used to wind the clock, set the time, alarm etc. Not having separate control knobs means that the mechanism on the rear is flat enough for the clock to neatly fold in the case.
Approximate Size:
Case Width, Height, Depth (WHD): 9.4 x 9 x 2.9 cm
Clock Face Width (including Chrome surround): 7.5cm
In pretty good working condition, the alarm clock face is cream-white, with the hands and numerals in a contrasting black with beige highlights. Really easy to read from a distance but not in the dark as its hands are not luminous. The rear of the clock has pitting and surface blemishes commensurate with age and use.
The pinky/red leather casing is in fairly good vintage condition with some surface blemishes/scuffs commensurate with age and use. The zip is working effectively and all the stitching is intact. The colour of the leather isn't perfectly represented by the images, which I've found difficult to reproduce: it's a dark pink-red.
The clock is thought to date to the 1930s/40s, and it is possible that the 7-Jewel movement, probably 8-day, may have been manufactured by Jaeger leCoultre (JLC) for Smiths. We haven’t opened up the clock to check for any distinguishing maker’s marks. It would probably require a CLA (clean, lube and adjust) service to guarantee accurate time keeping.
All in all, a beautiful, and useable, collectible art deco alarm clock. You don't see many with this design!
