Beautifully hand painted with black outlines for their features and hair, the girl is wearing a yellow dress with red scarf, and the boy sports a red jacket, yellow trousers and a very dapper yellow hat and scarf. He also carries a musical string instrument under his arm. I love the expressions on their faces and the way they appear to lean against the books.
Royal Stuart was the brand name of Spencer Stevenson & Co. Ltd, Dresden Works, Longton, Staffordshire Potteries, who only manufactured their own brand from 1948-1960. They are mainly known for their bone china tea sets, including Chintz, Harlequin and Willow patterns so this little pair of bookends is a rarity.
They would look great in a child’s bedroom, on a book shelf, or as a welcome and unusual addition to a figurine collection.
