Vintage Ophthalmology Berger Loupe
This wearable Vintage Ophthalmology Berger Loupe is a very strange looking device. The design centres around a biconvex lens with a black moulded plastic 'hood,' and fitted with an elastic head band to position the loupe over the ophthalmologist's eyes.
In good cosmetic condition with a few scuffs and surface blemishes. There is no maker's mark and it is supplied as is, without a box or instructions.
Approximate Size WHD: 13 (max) x 6 x 12 cm
Loupes or magnifiers, in conjunction with a light source, have been used for many years by ophthalmologists for eye examinations but, in the late Victorian era, Dr E Berger was looking for something more 'hands free,' Patented in 1900, Berger commissioned Koch, Switzerland to make a 2-lens binocular loupe. The design was then manufactured by different companies including Gowllands in the UK.
