Vintage Devonmoor Art Pottery Toby Jug With Blue Coat / Trousers
This is a gorgeous 1930s / 40s hand painted Vintage Devonmoor Art Pottery Toby Jug With Blue Coat / Trousers and yellow cuffs, waistcoat and stockings. He has a lovely cheeky expression, and ruddy cheeks and nose: perhaps due to too much beer...
In fairly good condition with no cracks or restoration, and with vibrant colours. There is some age related crazing, and flakes of paint missing / light chips particularly from the hat, tankard, tip of the handle and knee, and base. The price has been adjusted as a consequence.
Approximate size (WHD): 6.5 cm (Base Width) x 16 cm x 14cm (maximum depth including handle)
Dressed in typical toby jug style, the Georgian era gentleman sports a curvaceous black tricorn hat, a white wig, and is holding a pipe and tankard of beer. He is a toby jug as it depicts his full body.
The green printed backstamp reads:
- Devonmoor Art Pottery Co.
- WMT (the painter's initials)
Made by the Devonmoor Art Pottery Co. of Ilsington, Devon, the company reopened for the second time in 1923 and closed in 1981. The company was initially founded in 1913 by Herford Hope as the Liverton Art pottery but ceased operations in 1914 due to the advent of WW1.
A great Kitsch item for your collection of toby / character jugs or use as a novelty posy vase or display item. Accessories shown in the photos are not included.
