Vintage Aircraft Twin Magneto/Accumulator Switch Type 49 Air Ministry 10A/7540
This is a very unusual Vintage Aircraft Twin Magneto/Accumulator Switch Type 49 Air Ministry 10A/7540. It was used to start a 12 volt, 80 watt, motor generator.
It comprises two brass Dolly Switches on a ceramic base, fitted on to a bakelite and paxolin base which covers the electrical circuits. The main switch comprises a wood/brass handle which connects to both switches so that they can be depressed simultaneously.
It has been known for this type of equipment to be converted to a 'normal,' albeit novelty, light switch by those with electrical know how: not a project for the amateur electrician!
The brass dolly switches are marked:-
OFF
START
RUNNING
The back of the bakelite base is marked:-
MG -
MG+
ACC + -
where
MG= Magneto
ACC= Accumulator
The side of the bakelite is marked A.M with the air ministry crown and
SWITCH TYPE 49
REF No. 10A/7540
where 10A = Misc Radio Equipment
It's a bit of a mystery as to which 1930s aircraft generator the magneto/accumulator switch was used in, and why it is marked 10A for radio equipment.
