Small Vintage Hand Painted Kelsboro Ware Auld Mac Character Jug

Here is a wonderful Small Vintage Hand Painted Kelsboro Ware Auld MacCharacter Jug, with lovely vibrant colours and a very Scottish tartan theme. ‘Auld Mac’ is also wearing a tam o’ shanter: the traditional Scottish bonnet worn by men. The name derives from Tam o’ Shanter, the eponymous hero of the 1790 Robert Burns poem.

Auld mac was inspired by a song by Sir Harry Lauder, a 20th-century singer and comedian, called “Bang, Went Sixpence!” The story goes that a Scotsman named Mac found the prices too high in London because every time he made a move, “Bang went sixpence!”

He was made as ‘Kelsboro Ware’, at the Longton New Art Pottery Co Ltd in the heart of the Staffordshire Potteries, which was established in 1932.

This lovely character jug is in very good vintage condition with no cracks, chips or restoration. There is a glazing mark on the rim of the base.

It was probably originally purchased as a souvenir in the 1950s.
