Pair of Vintage Black Forest Wood Face Wall Masks / Plaques
This is a lovely Pair of Vintage Black Forest Wood Face Wall Masks / Plaques. Typical folk art made as souvenirs in either Switzerland or Germany (Black Forest ware) during the 1950s/60s.
The pair probably represent a woodcutter and his wife. He is sporting a traditional hat and pipe whist the woman has a very nicely tied headscarf.
Each wall mask has a simple steel hanging hook.
Approximate Size:
Female:
- Width: 14.7 cm
- Height without hook: 22cm
- Depth: 4.4 cm
Male
- Width: 15 cm
- Height without hook: 21.5 cm
- Depth: 4.5 cm
In very good condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. They have a nice patina but I don't think they are carved from solid wood and are possibly a wood based composite.
They are very similar in structure to the wall masks manufactured by Achatit Werkstäten, a German maker, but they are not back marked. Achatit is made from a combination of finely ground rock and wood poured into moulds with binding agents, then polished with agate.
