This is a Pair of 1920s Herzite / Cymosite Radio Detector Crystal Tins With Crystals. The tins, used for storing the radio crystal detectors, are the same as used for storing gramophone needles and are often referred to as 'needle tins'.
The tins are in fairly good condition, with a few scuffs and scratches commensurate with age and storage.
Approximate Size:- 5 x 3.5 x 1cm
Two tins are included in the listing:
1.0 An orange tin Cymex Branded Hertzite
2.0 A blue tin branded Cymosite
Each tin was made by The North Eastern Instrument Company, Low Fell, Gateshead, England and contains one or more small pieces of crystalline lead sulphide, Galena. This mineral was used in early 20th century radio receivers, for example, the cat whisker detector, acting as the first type of 'semiconductor diode' in conjunction with a fine wire (see image- accessories are not included).
