Original 1930s Clarice Cliff Hand Painted Fantasque Solitude 29.5cm Oval Plate
This is a gorgeous Original 1930s Clarice Cliff Hand Painted Fantasque Solitude 29.5cm Oval Plate.
Part of the Fantasque range, it was hand painted when Clarice was working at the AJ Wilkinson factory and is not a more modern reproduction. From the backstamp, it is possible that the plate was made in the late 1920s.
The pattern is 'Solitude,' which is amazing with its red/orange trees and yellow/orange finger-like tendrils dangling over a beautiful blue pool: an amazing item for Clarice Cliff collectors!
It's in pretty good condition, with no chips, cracks or restoration. Some of the paint has very slightly flaked off in parts, (see photos for examples), but the colours are still vibrant and the brush strokes tangibly visible. There is some discolouration on the rear of the plate and the usual typical manufacturing defects e.g. black spots.
Approximate Size:
- Width: 29.5cm (~11.5")
- Height: 2.5cm (1")
- Depth: 23.5 cm (~9.25")
I love Clarice Cliff but have never been able to add any more 'Solitude' items to my collection so I have reluctantly decided to part with this plate.

Some History For You.
A. J. Wilkinson Ltd, Newport Pottery and Shorter & Son Ltd factories were all owned by the Shorter family, and they worked in close co-operation. Their main claim to fame was Clarice Cliff, whom worked at the A.J. Wilkinson factory. In 1927/8 Clarice Cliff designed the handpainted ‘Bizarre Ware’ pottery range. The name for the range was chosen by Colley Shorter whom married Clarice Cliff in 1940 after the death of his first wife.
