Antique Salter Spring Balance No.2 25 lbs Weight

This is an original Antique Salter Spring Balance No.2 25 lbs Weight. It is made out of metal with a brass face. The back of the Spring balance is covered by steel/iron. 

The scale is calibrated in lbs up to a maximum of 25 lbs (approximately 11.3Kg). I’m not sure how accurate it is, but it does appear to work!

It is quite large at approx. 26.5 cms long (not including the ring and hook), and was Made in England after 1890.

In fair used condition but with surface scuffs, dents and scratches. The ring, hook and back are quite rusty but I haven’t been tempted to polish them as some people prefer the ‘rusty’ look.

Spring balances were used from the early 18th Century as they were easy to use with no need to balance the goods. They were quickly adopted by the service industry including the postal service, fishing, farming, groceries/ fruit shops, butchers, and custom/ excise. In fact, for weighing all sorts of large and unwieldy objects.

This Salter spring balance (scales) would make a great addition to a collection of weights and measures, as a display item at home or the office, weighing that big fish catch or even for Garden flower hanging baskets!
