Antique GPO Telegraph Terminal Block / 14-Way Busbar Marked With A Crown and 71
This lovely piece of Telegraphy ephemera is an Antique GPO Telegraph Terminal Block / 14-Way Busbar Marked With A Crown and 71.
It dates to around WW1 and could have been used in military communications or the Post Office. In pretty good condition with some scuffs and blemishes commensurate with age and use.
Comprising three parts:-
- The Base: Constructed from solid hardwood serving as the non-conductive mounting block.
- The Conductor: a thick, heavy-gauge metal strip capable of handling current.
- The Terminals: Configured with 14 discrete connection points (ways) secured by heavy brass knurled binding posts
The crown stamp with the number 71 is an official British government inspection or verification mark. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, early telecommunications equipment used by the General Post Office (GPO), the Board of Trade, or the military (War Department) was stamped by a government inspector upon passing quality control. The crown signifies state ownership/approval, and "71" is the specific inspector's or station's identification number.
A wonderful piece of communications history which would look great in a home office!
