1950s Vintage Ecko BP257 MW/LW Portable Valve Radio

This 1950s Vintage Ecko BP257 MW/LW Portable Valve Radio is a very interesting looking radio, with all the stations located on the top of the radio and a large cream tuning knob protruding on both sides. The cream volume control is on the left hand side with a matching on/off knob on the right hand side.

With its novelty aesthetics, we are selling this radio as a collectible for display only. We do not know if it is in working order as we are unable to test it as the batteries are now obsolete, and it is unlikely to meet modern HS&E standards.

Condition:-

  • Covered in its original snakeskin style cloth, which is grey/cream on the sides and in pretty good condition but looks discoloured. It has had a gentle clean.
  • The plastic handle, dials and fascia are creamy/yellow; these have possibly discoloured from off-white with time and UV exposure but are otherwise in good condition.
  • The front grill is covered with a black/white/brown/gold checked cloth and has a gold Ekco badge both of which are in pretty good cosmetic condition.
  • The radio was originally powered by a 7.5V and 90V HT batteries, however, these have been unavailable for quite a few years. Radio Electronics experts have been known to circumvent the battery problem by converting to a mains power supply, so this could be a nice little Winter restoration project for someone with the necessary expertise!
