This small picture is a 1950s Shipton & Co Real Butterfly Wing Hand Painted In Oils With The Ship RMS Sylvania. Framed in a cute chrome picture frame, which has a small amount of pitting and a couple of missing fittings.
Approximate Frame Size: 9 x 6.5 x 1.1 cm (~ 3.5 x 2.5 ")
In fair condition, the RMS Sylvania painting has flaking / cracked oil paint, particularly on the sides of the boat. The butterfly wings have possibly lost some colour but appear to be mostly intact. The price has been adjusted to reflect its condition.
Patented in 1922 by the famous UK jewellers, Shipton & Co, these sorts of pictures used Butterfly wings to produce coloured pictures or to paint images on to the butterfly wing. They became very popular from the 1920s and often appeared in jewellery or souvenirs with butterflies specially bred for the art or, nowadays, once these magnificent creatures have passed away.
Printed on the rear of the frame:-
