1930s Decca 50 DS Portable Gramophone Red Cased And In Working Condition

This gorgeous looking record player is a 1930s Decca 50 DS Portable Gramophone Red Cased And In Working Condition! It has a lid closing mechanism and a very useful carrying handle, but I wouldn't want to carry it too far as it is well built and pretty heavy.

Approximate Size: 42 (depth) x 29.4 (width) x 17 (height) centimetres

It plays 78 rpm records, and you have to manually wind the gramophone in order to play the record.  No electric or automation in this device!

It does have some scuffs, rust, and blemishes, commensurate with age and use but, otherwise, is in surprisingly good condition.

Summary:

  • Speed Adjuster: Fast-slow
  • Manual off/on switch
  • Plays 78s only (record not included)
  • Turn the winder handle clockwise to make the plaque turn. Wind up handle can be removed if wound anti-clockwise.
  • Cream motor board
  • Spare needles in the needle container
  • Record Storage compartment inside the lid
  • Marked on the head: No. 3

It was manufactured by the Decca Gramophone Company, part of Barrett Samuel & Sons.

The chrome arm is marked with the following Patent Numbers:-

  • 290469
  • 297559
  • 298330:
These were all filed on 27th August 1927 by Albert Wright of the  Gilson Company Limited, Billet works, Walthamstow. A metal work industry whom was probably responsible for making the chrome work and elements of the sound box.

A lovely piece of nostalgia for those of us whom love vintage audio equipment!
