1930 Tavo Meci Multimeter With Avostat 23 / 39 by Siegfried Guggenheimer

This 1930 Tavo Meci Multimeter With Avostat 23 / 39 by Siegfried Guggenheimer is a real survivor and has an unusual history.

Made by the German company, Siegfried Guggenhemier, (prior to becoming Metrawatt AG in 1933), this case of Tavo accessories was bought in 1930 in France for the Chief Engineer, (Mr V. Cockle), of Service/Installations at Pathé:  a major film equipment and production company.

The instructions for using the multimeters is on a metal label, attached to the rear of the meters, and written in French. There is also an accompanying instruction booklet written in French: which is slightly grubby but intact.

The transit case is in fair condition with scuffs and tears in the surface covering. The actual multimeter accessories are in very good condition but have not been tested.

Transit case size: - 24 x 22.5 x 7 cm

The chief engineer obviously didn't trust his colleagues as he has written his name and company address on the inside of the case!

The contents comprise the following:

  • Avostat 23 No. 423645: used for direct current for measuring current and voltage measurements
  • Avostat 39 No. 423647: used for alternating current for measuring current and voltage measurements
  • TAVO MECI: moving coil movement; Direct current;
    Scales: 0 ... 30 V= / 0 ... 120 V~ / 0 ... 30 V~ (non-linear scales)
  • 30A Shunt
  • 15A Shunt

Fantastic collectible for those of us whom love vintage technology!

An English Translation of an excerpt from the instructions:

Terminal designation a+nd - .
The connection is made to the two terminals, namely for voltage measurements according to FIG. 2/for current measurements according to FIG. 1, taking into account the terminal designations + and -. (See page 3.) If the pointer on the reading instrument deflects incorrectly, the two connections must be reversed.
The reading is taken on scale I.
The values read off the scale are to be multiplied as follows for the different measuring ranges...
