1960s BMC Hand Cranked Polished Chrome Fire Alarm Bell

1960s BMC Hand Cranked Polished Chrome Fire Alarm Bell. A large, wall mounted, fire evacuation bell in very good condition. Beautifully polished with the centre embossed with ‘FIRE’ and painted red.

The bell was made by the British Motor Corporation (BMC): the same company responsible for the manufacture of the British Morris and Austin Motor cars. Underneath, the base does look like a vintage car brake disc and BMC did own the ‘Pressed Steel’ company!

It has a very nice ‘ringtone’ and we believe that it actually came from the BMC factory floor but we have no provenance for this.

A simple mechanical mechanism which comprises a roller on the end of an arm which, when turning the handle, rotates and the roller passes an extruding piece of metal resulting in the ring.

A great talking point for the loft apartment or use as a dinner gong! Wonderful object for collectors of fire related ephemera and industrial design. I remember these from my primary school days too!
