Danish Aarhus Derby Vintage Transistor Radio In Grey / Red

This is a rare Danish Aarhus Derby Vintage Transistor Radio In Grey / Red colour way, manufactured in the 1950s / 60s by the Derby factory in Aarhus, Denmark. It has a typical MCM Scandinavian minimalist design.

It is being sold as a collectable, for display only, as we have not been able to test it and it no longer meets modern H&S requirements.

Construction:-

  • Grey plastic
  • Black plastic handle
  • Grey push buttons on top of the radio
  • A red fabric covered fascia
  • White plastic grilles on both sides
  • Chrome aerial which pulls out from the side of the radio

The radio is in fair-poor cosmetic condition but still displays well. The price has been adjusted as a consequence.

I think the green label 'Freigabe' on the base means 'To open,' as this is the location of the battery compartment'

I can't quite read what the red label says.

Condition:-

  • There are bits of plastic missing from the face side white grille, and the grille is cracked on both the face and the back
  • There are signs of discolouration and wear/scuffing
  • Some loss of lettering on the grey push buttons

Summary of Specification:-

  • Manufacturer: Derby Factory, Aarhus, Denmark
  • Date: 1960s
  • Wavebands: AM/FM, LW/MW
  • Approx. Max. Dimensions including handle:  28 x 23 x 10cm
  • Number: 6611

The Derby factory in Aarhus was originally established as a moped/scooter factory before briefly expanding into consumer electronics. The facility produced television sets under the name Derby and radio receivers under the model name Calypso.

Although this is a distressed radio relic from Denmark, it is still a rare and lovely looking transistor radio to use as home decor or as a movie prop!

⚠️ Safety Warning: Like many vintage transformerless or live-chassis European radios of this era, the internal chassis can be directly tied to the mains voltage, posing an electric shock risk. An isolation transformer is strongly recommended when servicing or operating it on modern grids.
