Vintage British Gardeners Association BGA Gilt Brass And Enamel Badge

This is a very nice, small, Edwardian Vintage British Gardeners Association BGA Gilt Brass And Enamel Badge. Made by Sydenham Brothers, (S. Bros), Tenby Street, Birmingham.

Approximate Size: 4 x 2.5 x 0.1 cm

In very good condition with age related micro scratches, the badge is composed of gilt brass. It has

  • Blue enamel around the outside containing the gilded words- British Gardeners Assocn. Estab: 1904
  • A red enamel shield gilded with the letters BGA
  • It is topped with an integrated loop and suspension ring, indicating it was intended to be worn on a watch chain (fob) or as a formal dress medal
  • The rear of the badge is stamped S.Bros

S. Bros operated from the Victorian period until the mid 20th Century and were well-regarded for producing high-quality enamel work, sporting medals, club badges, and military sweetheart brooches.

The British Gardeners' Association (BGA) was heavily active as a trade union and professional body in the early 1900s, and Sydenham Brothers were highly prolific during this exact window, hence the badge almost certainly dates to the Edwardian period between 1904 and 1910.

A very nice item for the Badge collector or fans of gardening!

NB: the fob chain is shown for photographic purposes only and is not included.
