Vintage LMT Lowther-Murray Transistor Control Unit No.2

This is a preowned, 1950s, Vintage LMT Lowther-Murray Transistor Control Unit No.2 also known as a Lowther Matching Unit no.2- a transistor driven pre-amp. In very good used condition with only a few surface marks. The on/off switch turns with a resounding click.

I've no idea if it is working... It is being sold as a collectible for display only. I can't find another for sale, only mentions of the unit in various late 1950s/ early 1960s HiFi magazines and journal: see attached excerpt with the no.2 control unit advert boxed in red.

Comprising a dark olive green painted metal body with a white plastic on/off turning knob, the unit no.2 has two sockets for input and output and two metal labels with the following information:

Brass Label 1:-

  • The Lowther Manufacturing Co., Lowther Hose, St Mark's Road, Bromley Kent.
  • Type L-M-T No. 2
  • Serial No. 3

Black Metal Label 2:-

  • Lowther-Murray Transitor Amplifier
  • Patent Applied for No. 32314/56 (in 1956 by Paul G.A.H Voigt)
  • Made in England
  • The Lowther MFG. CO..., Bromley, Kent
According to the 1957 Hifi Year Book:-
  • The transistor control unit no.2 is an early transistor driven Mono pre-amp designed to operate with any power amplifier including the Lowther LL10 and LL16
  • Function: an impedance matching pre-amp to improve audio signal
  • Inputs: 5mV. 5-50 Ohms
  • Gain: 45-1

Best known for their loudspeakers, the Lowther Manufacturing Co., Lowther House, St Mark's Road, Bromley, Kent, UK., was founded in 1930 and are still manufacturing today.
