Vintage Brentleigh Ware Red Ballet Shoes Pocket Wall
A very pretty Vintage Brentleigh Ware Red Ballet Shoes Wall Pocket, made by the Howard Pottery Co., Shelton, Staffordshire, UK. They are a deep red in colour, with black accent marks.
The wall pocket is in fairly good condition with no chips, cracks or restoration, however, the paint has flaked off in several places and there is some crazing. The shoes can be hung on the wall via the attached red shoes laces, (which were added in the 1980s, replacing the frayed red ribbon).
Approximate Measurements (back of the shoes)
- Full Shoe length: 21.5cm (8.5″)
- Part shoe length: 19.5cm (7.7″)
- Maximum width: Approx. 11.5cm (4.5″)
The Registered design number, 871203, is from 1953. The red ballet shoes were probably made as a consequence of the iconic, and popular, British 1948 ballet film, The Red Shoes, by Powell and Pressburger. The film is itself based on the fairytale ‘The Red Shoes’ by Hans Christian Anderson.
