Here is a wonderful Small Vintage Hand Painted Cooper Clayton Bill Sykes Character Jug.
Bill Sikes (Sykes) is the fictional character from one of Charles Dickens’ best loved books ‘Oliver Twist.’ Bill was the nasty, rage-filled career criminal, whom kills Oliver’s friend ‘Nancy,’ and had the dog called ‘Bulls Eye’, whom he kicked mercilessly. He was famously played by Oliver Reed in the 1968 film musical ‘Oliver!’
Bill was manufactured by the Staffordshire pottery Cooper Clayton, based in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent in the 1940s.
This lovely character tankard is in very good vintage condition with no cracks, chips or restoration.

Some Trivia For You
Cooper and Clayton started the small pottery firm in the late 1940’s at Hanley in Stoke-on-Trent. They made character jugs e.g. Robin Hood and his men, and characters from Shakespeare and Charles Dickens’ novels.
The company went bust in the 1950s and all the moulds were sold to Sterling Pottery Ltd., Fenton, England.
