Vintage Chrome & Wood Surround Rototherm Thermometer

A Vintage Chrome & Wood Surround Rototherm Thermometer, dating to the 1930s and made for the BI Callenders company: British Insulated Callender's Cables (BICC). It has a lovely large face, with an easy to read dial showing the ‘freezing point’ temperature of 32 ºF, and measures from -20 to 140 ºF.

Made by the British Rototherm Co. Ltd, London, England,.

A ‘must have’ item for the vintage office. It measures temperature in Fahrenheit and is encased in a wood surround with rolled wood feet, allowing it to display nicely on an office desk or mantelpiece. (NB: the photos have been taken with and without flash hence the colour differences).

The bimetallic thermometer is in good working order.  The brown wood surround is in pretty good condition with a few scuffs and blemishes commensurate with age and use.

Someone obviously left the thermometer in a room when it was being decorated as there are tiny flecks of white paint on the wood, which I've not tried to remove as I don't want to mark the wood. For someone with crafting skills, the thermometer could be removed from the surround to enable the wood to be lightly sanded/varnished.

Approximate Dimensions:

  • Plinth Depth: 3.7cm
  • Plinth Length: 8cm
  • Height (Plinth and Thermometer): 12.3cm
  • Diameter of thermometer face: 8.3cm
  • Diameter of the thermometer including the wood surround: 12 cm

Bimetallic Thermometer

Rototherm invented the bimetallic thermometer in 1934. The thermometer has a metal pointer that moves up and down a circular scale. The pointer is mounted on a coiled piece of metal called a bimetallic strip. The hotter the temperature, the more the bimetallic strip expands, and the more it pushes the pointer up the scale.
