1930s Brass Rototherm Thermometer In A Wood Surround

This is a lovely 1930s Brass Rototherm Thermometer In A Wood Surround. It has an easy to read dial showing the ‘freezing point’ temperature of 32 ºF, and measures from 0 to 120 ºF.

Made by the British Rototherm Co. Ltd, London, England, British Patent Number 378314: patent dating to 1932, for Curry and Paxton, opticians to the film stars and Royalty based in London, UK.

Approximate Dimensions:

  • Depth: 3 cm
  • Width: 13.9cm (~ 5.5″)
  • Height : 20.4 cm (~8"0)
  • Diameter of thermometer face: 10cm (~4")

A ‘must have’ item for the man cave, she den, study or office. It measures temperature in Fahrenheit and is encased in a typical Art Deco oak surround, allowing it to display nicely on a wall.

The bimetallic thermometer is in working order with a brass coloured face and black numerals. There are no cracks or restoration but there is a small chip in the wood at the front right hand side, and there are a few surface blemishes commensurate with age and use. The inside face of the glass could probably do with a clean.

The back is marked Curry and Paxton Ltd, London, who are opticians originally established in Great Portland Street in 1878. Michael Caine famously first wore Curry and Paxton glasses in the 1965 film, The Ipcress File, and again in  "The Italian Job" in 1969!

    Bimetallic Thermometer

Rototherm invented the bimetallic thermometer in 1934. The thermometer has a metal pointer that moves up and down a circular scale. The pointer is mounted on a coiled piece of metal called a bimetallic strip. The hotter the temperature, the more the bimetallic strip expands, and the more it pushes the pointer up the scale.
