12AX7 Brimar Long Plate Thermionic Valve Manufactured February 1961

On offer today we have a Brimar white print 12AX7, long plate, Thermionic Valve made at the Brimsdown plant and carrying a date code for February 1961.

For Va = 250 V Vg = -2.0V against a nominal specification of anode current Ia = 1.2 mA and mutual conductance gm = 1.6 mA/V, the following results were obtained:-

A1 Ia = 1.2 mA gm = 1.5 mA/V

A2 Ia = 1.1 mA gm = 1.4 mA/V

As you can appreciate this represents good matching of each triode section within the envelope and a device showing superb emission.

This valve type is extensively used in today’s designs of hi-fi audio amplifiers in very much the same way as they found use in classic audio amplification designs of the 1950s and 1960s, with the valve's two triode sections being used as second stage amplification and cathode coupled phase splitter - the phase splitter being required so that the push-pull output stage was driven correctly.
