I just had to share this beautiful Paragon Fine Bone China tea service with you. It is so quintessentially British! Each piece of this 21-piece set features one of Harry Wheatcroft’s “Six world famous roses.” They are all made from fine bone china and the edges are gilded. The inside of each tea cup is pastel coloured to complement the 6 different roses. An accompanying milk jug/creamer, sugar bowl and cake plate also have a rose motif and complement a corresponding tea cup. A delightful set for Afternoon tea served on a pristine white tablecloth.
Harry Wheatcroft Roses
The ‘Six World Famous Roses’ range was designed by Paragon in conjunction with the renowned rose grower, Harry Wheatcroft (1898-1977). An eccentric English Gardener known for his flamboyant clothes and huge whiskers! He was also responsible for introducing some of Britain’s best loved roses, including ‘Peace’ and ‘Queen Elizabeth.’
The six roses chosen for this tea set are as follows:-
- Prelude: a pink rose
- Peace: a red/yellow rose
- Rendezvous: a pink/red rose
- Virgo: a white rose
- Grand Gala: a red rose
- Madame Ch. Sauvage: a yellow rose
According to Wikipedia: Wikipedia.org:-
“The Paragon China Company was a British manufacturer of bone china from 1919 to 1960, based in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, previously known as the Star China Company, and more recently part of the Royal Doulton group. Paragon was noted for producing high quality teaware and tableware, and was granted royal warrants of appointment by several members of the British Royal Family.”
Dating to the 1950s/60s, it is in great condition, with some manufacturing defects, and with a little wear to the gilding on the rims. There are no chips, cracks or crazing as this tea set has been no where near a dish washer; definitely one to wash by hand!
The bottom of each piece is back marked with:-
The coat of Arms of HM Queen Elizabeth
“By appointment to Her Majesty The Queen China Potters
Fine Bone China
Six World Famous Roses”
Signed with Harry Wheatcroft’s signature and the name of the rose.
What isn’t there to like! My favourite is ‘Prelude’ I just love the colour and the shape of the bloom. What’s your favourite?
