It is being sold as a collectible for display only due to the age of its optics.

In pretty good condition for its age, there are a few scuffs and blemishes and a small dent in the lens cap. Moving a tiny slide mechanism on the eye piece reveals a brass inbuilt cover, which is a little dusty.

I haven't attempted to polish it as some people prefer to see the original patina. You can see through the telescope but I find the image a little blurry and, as you'd expect with antique optics, totally distorted if you try and focus through a window.

Approximate Size:

Maximum Diameter: 4cm

Length when retracted: 21.7 cm (~ 8.5")

Length when extended:- 53.4cm (21")

Comprising three brass sections, and covered with brown leather, the top section is engraved

T Underhill, 4 Old Millgate, Manchester

According to the Directory of British scientific instrument makers, 1550-1851, page 285:

Thomas Underhill was an optician who worked at the following addresses in Manchester: 40 Water St (1834–1838), 70 Bridge St, Deansgate (1841), 4 Old Millgate (1848), 2 Corporation St (1858–1864), 4 Corporation St (1868), and 53 Princess St (1873–1881).

A lovely old telescope that would take pride of place in a room or collection.

NB: Accessories, e.g. the brass stand, are shown for illustration only and are not included in the sale.

Please click on the following link for more vintage scientific instruments.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0303/5122/8972/files/Antique_Brass_and_Leather_Three_Draw_Telescope_Made_By_T_Underhill_In_1848.jpg?v=1776249286
https://mullardantiques.co.uk/en-us/products/antique-brass-and-leather-three-draw-telescope-made-by-t-underhill-in-1848
