Vintage Large Bakelite Rototherm Thermometer With Painted Red Surround

This Vintage Large Bakelite Rototherm Thermometer With Painted Red Surround dates to the 1940s. It has a lovely large face, with an easy to read dial. This was a more accurate and expensive version of the standard small face Rototherm.

The thermometer is in pretty good working order. There are blemishes on the Rototherm, which are particularly noticeable on the brown bakelite rear, but the red/brown painted surround is still nice and glossy.

Made by the British Rototherm Co. Ltd, London, England.

A ‘must have’ item for the study or office. It measures temperature in Fahrenheit and shows the comfort zone between 60 and 70 ºF. It can be wall hung or sit nicely on a desk, shelf, or mantelpiece.

Approximate Dimensions:

  • Height:- 10cm
  • Diameter of thermometer face (including surround): 10cm (4″)

Bimetallic Thermometer

Rototherm invented the bimetallic thermometer in 1934. The thermometer has a metal pointer that moves up and down a circular scale. The pointer is mounted on a coiled piece of metal called a bimetallic strip. The hotter the temperature, the more the bimetallic strip expands, and the more it pushes the pointer up the scale.
