Boer War Metal Lighter Shaped Travelling Inkwell With Glass Insert

This lovely little pocket sized item is a nickel plated Boer War Metal Lighter Shaped Travelling Inkwell With Glass Insert.

This type of inkwell was used during the second Boer War, 1899-1902, and the metal was often covered with khaki covered leather.

Approximate Size: 44 x 19 x 44 mm

Shaped like a cigarette lighter, it is spring-loaded with a thumb release button, glass insert for the ink, and a hinged case. The lid doesn't pop up once the button is pressed, you have to lift it gently to ensure the contents don't spray out!

Both the case and glass bottle are in very good condition with the spring latch and hinges working as intended.

  • The glass has a few nicks at the edges and manufacturing defects e.g. bubbles, but no breaks.
  • The rubber seal is present, although slightly degraded, in the metal lid of the inkwell. A reasonable fit to the neck of the glass but I've not checked to see whether or not it seals well enough to prevent leaks.
  • The metal has a few surface blemishes including slight dents and surface scratches. The inside is stained with ink.

A lovely piece of writing history for the ink pen aficionado or militaria collector, and just waiting to find the perfect travelling companion!

NB: Ink is not included due to the difficulties in shipping liquids.
