1920s Royal Doulton Nautical Series Sea Shanty Jug

A lovely 1920s Royal Doulton Nautical Series Sea Shanty Jug; a pattern first introduced in 1927. It has a pale yellow handle in the shape of a twisted rope, which was specially designed for this series.

There is a hand tinted 19th Century sea port scene each side, and a verse from a sea shanty:-

  • A sailor bidding a sad farewell to his sweetheart with a sailing ship in the background. The sea shanty is ‘Bound for the Rio Grande.’
  • Three sailors on a pier in traditional dress. One has a parrot in a cage. The sea shanty mentions, Cape Stiff, California and Sacramento and I believe is called ‘Sacramento’.
  • A ship surrounded by rope (the printing on the sea shanty has slightly rubbed during manufacture). The sea shanty is ‘Rolling Home To Dear Old England.’
  • Anchors and a seagull around the handle complete the seafaring theme.

In very good condition, with no cracks or restoration. There is some crazing, and the bottom of the jug is not perfect where the base has been removed from the ‘board.’ The defect resembles a chip but it is glazed over and was probably created when first manufactured.

Royal Doulton backstamp with ‘Sea Shanty Jug’ and rd. nos. 732558/9 printed.

Approximate Dimensions

  • Height including handle 17cm (6.7in)
  • Base diameter: 11.4cm (4.5″)

A beautiful jug and increasingly difficult to find. It would make a lovely water pitcher or vase for display in a kitchen, bathroom or coastal home.

The sea shanties themselves appear to be those published by the New Zealand Historian, James Cowan based on the sea shanties sung by the Māori sailor named Tohi Te Marama in Milford Sound, New Zealand, and English Traditional Naval shanties.

One verse from the sea shanty ‘Bound for the Rio Grande‘:-

O Say, were you ever in Ri-o Grande

O you Ri-o!

It’s there that the river runs down golden sand

And we’re bound for the Rio Grande!

O fare you well my bonny young girl-

For we’re bound for the Rio Grande.
