Vintage Bakelite Rototherm Thermometer On Alabaster Base

A wonderful Large Vintage Bakelite Rototherm Thermometer On Alabaster Base, dating to the 1940s. It has a lovely large face, with an easy to read dial. This was a more accurate and expensive version of the standard small face Rototherm.

Made by the British Rototherm Co. Ltd, London, England.

A ‘must have’ item for the ‘man cave’, ‘she den’, study or office. It measures temperature in Fahrenheit.

The thermometer is in perfect working order. There are scuffs on the edges of the alabaster plinth, which may or may not polish out. The black bakelite is shiny with no chips, cracks or restoration.

Approximate Dimensions:

  • Base length: 15.8cm
  • Base Width: 6.4cm

Bimetallic Thermometer

Rototherm invented the bimetallic thermometer in 1934. The thermometer has a metal pointer that moves up and down a circular scale. The pointer is mounted on a coiled piece of metal called a bimetallic strip. The hotter the temperature, the more the bimetallic strip expands, and the more it pushes the pointer up the scale.
