WW1 Panoramic Monochrome Photograph Of Staff At The Royal Victoria Hospital Netley

This wonderful original silver image is a WW1 Panoramic Monochrome Photograph Of Staff At The Royal Victoria Hospital Netley, near Southampton, UK.

The photo features Nurses, Care Workers, Medically Trained Troops, Volunteers and the Medical staff at the hospital. The photo, No. 1388, was taken on 16th January 1917 by the famous Panora Limited (Panoras) of 60, Doughty Street. W.C, London. Panora Limited was dissolved in 1989.

There aren't many surviving WW1 panoramic photographs. Most of the negatives have been destroyed. This one survived in such good condition as it was covered by an old panoramic school photograph. A wonderful slice of WW1 history and worthy of a museum exhibition!

It has been permanently mounted on a piece of 3 mm thick cardboard, and cannot be removed without damaging the image. In good condition with some yellowing, fading, and staining due to its age. It is officially an antique!

Approximate Size:

  • Width: 113.5 cm (3 foot)
  • Height: 19.2 cm (7.5")

NB: The photo is over 1.0 meter in length and, hence, exceeds the dimensions allowable using Royal Mail. The size also limits the number of shipping options available via courier. Hence the higher postage cost.

The hospital was opened in 1856 by Queen Victoria and mainly demolished in 1966, with the remnants of the estate removed in 1978. When first built, the building was the longest in Europe, and the largest military hospital in Britain. With its amazing architecture it was often nicknamed as 'The Palace of Pain!' Only the chapel and former YMCA building remain in the hospital estate now known as the 'Royal Victoria Country Park.'
