Antique Pair Of McGeogh Marine Brass Door Spring Hinges

These beautiful, large and heavy, marine hinges are an Antique Pair Of McGeogh Marine Brass Door Spring Hinges, made by the famous William McGeogh & Co. Ltd, Glasgow, Scotland.

Extremely rare survivors and in good condition. I haven’t attempted to clean them as I didn’t want to remove the patina.

Approximate Size:

  • Length of Straight section (top to bottom): 14.7cm (distance between screw holes ~ 13.5cm)
  • Width: Edge to edge of Hinge: 14.7cm
  • Height: 3cm

This pair of hinges has an unusual fitting comprising a screw plate on one side, and a more ornate side which has a rolling mechanism that moves across the door as it closed/opened. The Spring Hinge is under extreme tension and cannot be moved manually (at least not by me…). They must have been used on a very large door!

The hinges are marked William McGeogh and Co Ltd, Glasgow and date to the late 1800s or early 1900s, prior to the company expansion. We are not sure which ship they were used on but we believe they were acquired by the brother of an elderly friend of ours whom was both a Royal Navy and merchant seaman stationed in the Clydesbank area of Scotland.

The company were specialists in high quality Ship and Railway ironmongery, hardware, and electrical fittings. Many of their items were used on illustrious ships including the; RMS Olympic, RMS Titanic, RMS Lusitania and RMS Mauretania. Today, McGeogh still supply marine and explosion proof lighting to many of the world’s merchant and naval fleets.

A beautiful pair of hinges which are just waiting to be mounted on a suitable door or to be added to a naval memorabilia collection.
