1930s Sundial Beswick Ware China Cottage Cheese Dish Model 542

I love this 1930s Sundial Beswick Ware China Cottage Cheese Dish Model 542, and so did the late Queen Mary! She bought one at the Trade Fair in 1937.

Designed by Mr Watkin, a freelance designer at Beswick, the design was registered in 1938/39 (827924).

The lid is a beautiful design with a typical English Country feel. Incorporating a wall with flowers growing up it, topped with a lovely brown sundial. The plate is cream with an embossed green border representing grass.

Model numbers were assigned for Beswick designs in 1933 but the model designs were only dated from 1936, commencing with model number 378. Model 542 was made from 1937.

The overall Height (base to top) of the Cheese/ Butter dish is approximately 11.5cm and the maximum width 15.2cm (6″), and length 17.5cm.

Lid

• The lid is in good cosmetic condition for its age with no cracks or restoration. There is a tiny loss of brown paint from the sundial and some nibbles on the lid only apparent from the inside
• There is some very slight crazing to the glaze .
• Measures approximately: 13.3cm (Length) x 10.4cm (Width) x 9cm (Height)
• Stamped inside with Beswick ware. Made in England.

Plate

• The bottom plate is crazed and has manufacturing defects, including air bubbles.
• Some of the green paint has been scuffed off the surface at the edges.
• Measures approximately: 15.2cm/ 6″ (Width) x 17.8cm/ 7″ (length) x 2cm/ 0.8″ (Height)

This large butter/cheese dish makes a wonderful display item and would look great on a sideboard, on a Welsh dresser or the Afternoon Tea Table!
