Vintage Bretby Art Pottery Nursery Rhyme Bookends Models 3262 and 3263

These are a very kitsch pair of, chalk ware, Vintage Bretby Art Pottery Nursery Rhyme Bookends Models 3262 and 3263.  They are a dark creamy yellow in colour. The surface is scuffed rubbed in places, but there are no chips, cracks or restoration.

The Maker’s marks on the base include:-

  • The model numbers 3262 on one and 3263 on the other
  • Made in England
  • The Bretby ‘Starburst’ trademark

They date from the Art Deco period but I can’t give a definitive date, probably 1930s whilst still owned by Tooth & Co. Ltd.

The characters are from the following nursery rhymes:-

One is little Jack Horner with his thumb in the pie (3262)

Little Jack Horner
Sat in the corner,
Eating a Christmas pie;
He put in his thumb,
And pulled out a plum,
And said, ‘What a good boy am I!'

and the other figure is Little Miss Muffet sat on her Tuffet (3263).

Little Miss Muffet
Sat on a tuffet,
Eating her curds and whey;
Along came a spider
Who sat down beside her
And frightened Miss Muffet away.

They would look great in a child’s bedroom, on a book shelf, or as a welcome and unusual addition to an Art Pottery collection.

NB: Books shown in the photographs are not part of the sale and are for illustrative purposes only. The images have been taken with and without flash, hence the colour differences.
