Vintage Marine Stevenson Screen

This is a very nice Vintage Marine Stevenson Screen, which would have formed part of an external weather station probably on a ship.  A Stevenson screen is used to protect meteorological instruments against rain and direct heat whilst allowing the air to freely circulate.

Painted white to reflect direct solar radiation, it is in fair condition with

  • Paint loss, paint splashes and some loss of wood on the rear, and blemishes commensurate with age and use.
  • The metal plate on the roof is slightly loose.
  • There is also rust around the screws and nails.

We haven't attempted to restore or repaint it as some people prefer the patina.

It is a double-louvred single screen with slanting boards and roof. The base is also louvered with a space to allow the air to circulate. It has two pieces of wood at the base and top of the screen which would be used to secure the box against a pole or wall.

Approximate Size:

  • Interior dimensions:  40 x 16.5 x 14 cm
  • Exterior dimensions: 55 x 22.5 x 15 cm

This particular Stevenson screen would have housed meteorological instruments to measure, for example, the minimum and maximum temperature, humidity, dew point and atmospheric pressure, using equipment such as a U-tube thermometer or hygrometer: not included.

A perfect meteorological accessory for the garden or piece of shabby chic within the home!
