Vintage Boxed Set of Four Gramophone HMV Needle Tins

The set of four tins are in their original presentation box, which is in fair vintage condition with some loss of colour, creasing and age spots. They were sold by F. Leach, “His Master’s Voice” Instruments Records and Accessories, Park Road, Bingley, West Yorkshire, UK.

The tins are in good vintage condition, with some scuffing and rust on the sides/ back but the face images have retained their colour.

The needles were made by The Gramophone company, the parent company for ‘His Master’s Voice‘ (HMV). The Gramophone Company was founded in the UK in 1898 but merged with the Columbia Gramophone Company in 1931 forming the well known Electrical and Musical Industries (EMI).

Gramophone Needles

A steel needle was placed in the gramophone soundbox each time a 78rpm record was played. The needles were sold in different thicknesses and the thickness regulated the volume: there was no volume control on a gramophone. The thicker the needle, the louder the noise!

The needles were sold in tins containing 100 or 200 needles.  The tins themselves advertised different brands, with a wide range of graphics and colours, and are now highly collectible.
