WW2 RAF Aircraft Armament Bombing Distributor Storage Box 5D/1388
What an unusual find: a WW2 RAF Aircraft Armament Bombing Distributor Storage Box 5D/1388. Probably used to store a piece of bomb distributor for e.g. a Lancaster Bomber as shown in the image below.
The wooden box is in good condition but with a few scuffs, paint chips, and scratches, as would be expected for an object of this vintage.
- Width: 25.4cm (10″)
- Depth: 18.2cm (7.2″)
- Height 11.5cm (4.5″)
It is painted grey with the code 5D/ 1388, stencilled in white, on the front. The RAF Stores reference Number Database indicates that 5D denotes ‘Armament Bombing Equipment’.
The inside of the box is unlined and contains a metal spring, which probably held the equipment in place. The box closes with two metal clasps. The opposite side of the box has two painted metal hinges, which are rusting with age.
The outside of the box is stamped, as shown in the following image:-
This WW2 RAF Storage Box is a lovely piece for those of you whom love to collect militaria or for the vintage ‘man cave’ and ‘she den’. The great thing is that you can still use it as a storage box!
