1950s “POLO SPORTSMASTER” Automatic Petrol Lighter
This a very tactile and useful 1950s Polo Sportsmaster Automatic Petrol Lighter. It is in used condition, with no flint. It has slight surface scuffs/ scratches and would benefit from a polish.
I find petrol lighters useful for lighting barbecues, fires and camping stoves. I was a Girl Guide!
The petrol lighter is sold in an untested condition, and, therefore, may or may not work. In addition, it does not contain any lighter fuel/ gas.
Pearlman & Co were a English (London) company. They made fluid lighters from the 1930s to the 1950s. They produced many similar designs under the brand name ‘Polo’ but with subtle changes in mechanisms, stamps, and filler screws.
The mechanism for this particular lighter is very interesting and effective, working with a gear ratio. It was patented by the manufacturer in England in 1950 (Patent number 642908).
The lighter is back marked with the following:
- Made in England
- Polo Sportsmaster and Polo players on horses behind the brand name.
- B.R. Pat No. 642908
This is an image of the patent 642908 for the lighter, which is quite complex!
